Statement on Ralph Northam Victory

Sierra Club Statement on Ralph Northam Victory

RICHMONDVirginia– Today, Sierra Club endorsed Democrat Ralph Northam defeated Republican Ed Gillespie to become Virginia’s next governor. The Sierra Club endorsed Northam in June, and since has worked to organize and mobilize its members and Virginia voters.

In response, Kate Addleson, Director of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, released the following statement.

“We congratulate Ralph Northam on becoming Virginia’s next governor. His victory is one for Sierra Club members and environmentalists across the state, and every Virginian who seeks to build a more inclusive Commonwealth. Together, we will work to protect our communities from offshore drilling and the increasing threat of flooding and super storms fueled by climate change, while ensuring our communities are united by what we strive for, not divided by our appearances or beliefs.

“Virginians have championed clean air and water, protected coastline, and climate action for years, and they reaffirmed those beliefs with the election of Ralph Northam today. The Sierra Club was proud to have endorsed Northam, and we look forward to working with him as Virginia’s next governor.”
